  • Balance: The Missing Level of the Training Scale

    The Training Scale, when followed progressively, ultimately ends in balance in dressage.

    Collection is perhaps the greatest expression of balance: the horse is able to organise its body, carry more weight behind, remain light and mobile in front, and respond to the rider without losing rhythm, suppleness, connection or impulsion.

    Balance allows every element of the Training Scale to come to fruition.

    And yet, mysteriously, balance itself is missing from the Training Scale.

    I believe this is an important omission.

    Trainers and researchers such as Philippe Karl, Manolo Mendez and Dr Karin Leibbrandt have approached training from somewhat different directions, but their work repeatedly returns to the importance of the horse first being able to organise and balance its body.

    These ideas are not entirely new. They have roots in classical approaches to training, particularly within the French Classical tradition, while modern research into equine biomechanics increasingly gives us ways to understand why balance has such a profound effect on the horse’s movement.

    The fundamental idea is simple:

    Balance must come before everything else.

    Without balance, a horse cannot reliably maintain rhythm, tempo or regularity because he must continually speed up, slow down, shorten or lengthen his stride to catch his balance.

    Without balance, the horse cannot be truly supple because parts of the body must tense, brace or compensate to prevent him from losing equilibrium.

    Without balance, the horse cannot maintain a consistent connection with the rider because he may need to lean on the bit, duck behind the contact, hang on one rein or otherwise use the rider’s hand to help stabilise himself.

    Without balance, the horse cannot produce true impulsion because the energy generated by the hindquarters cannot travel efficiently through the body while the horse is simultaneously trying to stabilise himself.

    Without balance, the horse cannot become truly straight because he will continue to use his natural asymmetries to compensate.

    And without balance, the horse cannot develop collection because collection requires the horse to progressively redistribute his weight and carry more of himself through the hindquarters.

    Balance isn’t simply the result of the Training Scale.

    It influences every level of it.

    So Why Aren’t Horses Already Balanced?

    The answer is that, for the purposes of being a horse, they are.

    A horse in his natural environment is extremely well adapted to the things he needs to do.

    He can graze for hours with his head down. He can walk over uneven ground. He can turn quickly, accelerate suddenly and flee from danger. His body is organised remarkably well for survival.

    But the balance required to live successfully as a horse is not necessarily the same balance required to carry a rider and perform dressage.

    Horses naturally carry approximately 60–70% of their weight over the forehand. This makes perfect sense for an animal whose head and neck extend forward from the body and whose daily life involves spending considerable amounts of time grazing.

    Horses also have natural asymmetries.

    Like humans, individual horses tend to find some movements and directions easier than others. One shoulder may be more mobile. One direction may feel easier to turn. One hind limb may push more effectively while the other carries more effectively.

    In a natural environment, these asymmetries are not necessarily a problem.

    A horse can graze, move with the herd and escape danger perfectly successfully while being naturally asymmetric.

    Under saddle, however, the equation changes.

    We place additional weight on the horse’s back and then ask him to travel on circles, negotiate corners, perform transitions, move laterally, lengthen and shorten his stride, jump, collect and perform increasingly complex movements while remaining relaxed and responsive.

    The horse must therefore learn a new kind of balance: the balance required of a ridden athlete.

    Natural asymmetry that caused little difficulty in the paddock can now interfere with the horse’s ability to perform correctly and may contribute to uneven loading of the limbs and body.

    The purpose of training is not simply to make the horse perform movements.

    It is to progressively teach the horse how to organise his body so those movements can be performed in balance.

    What Is Balance in Dressage?

    It can be useful to think about the ridden horse’s balance in several different directions or planes.

    Rather than viewing a horse simply as either “balanced” or “unbalanced”, we can ask where the imbalance is occurring.

    For practical training purposes, we can consider four aspects:

    • Vertical balance
    • Horizontal balance
    • Lateral balance
    • Diagonal balance

    These interact constantly.

    An imbalance in one can create or exaggerate an imbalance somewhere else.

    The good news is that the reverse is also true:

    Improving one aspect of the horse’s balance can help improve another.

    Vertical Balance

    Think of the horse falling inward or outward on a circle.

    The horse may lean through the body rather than remaining organised over his feet. The shoulders may drift in or out, the ribcage may displace, and the horse may use speed or the rider’s reins to prevent himself from losing balance.

    A balanced circle is therefore not simply about following the correct geometric line.

    The horse must remain balanced on that line.

    Horizontal Balance

    Horizontal balance concerns the horse’s distribution of weight from front to back.

    A horse that falls heavily onto the forehand is horizontally imbalanced.

    This doesn’t mean that the goal is simply to make the front end lighter by lifting the horse’s head. The horse must gradually learn to organise the entire body so that the hindquarters can participate more effectively in carrying and propelling him.

    As training progresses, the horse develops an increasing ability to redistribute weight toward the hindquarters while remaining forward, relaxed and connected.

    This progression eventually contributes to collection.

    Lateral Balance

    Lateral balance concerns the horse’s ability to organise himself evenly from side to side.

    Imagine a horse that leg-yields easily to the left but becomes stuck, crooked or resistant when asked to move to the right.

    That difference gives us information.

    One side of the horse’s body may be more mobile or supple than the other. One limb may accept weight more readily. One shoulder may escape more easily.

    Lateral work allows us not only to identify these differences, but progressively improve them.

    Diagonal Balance

    Diagonal balance considers the relationship between the horse’s diagonal pairs and the way forces travel through the body.

    A horse may, for example, find shoulder-in relatively easy in one direction but struggle significantly in the other.

    That difficulty may not be isolated to one shoulder or one hind leg. It may reflect how the horse coordinates and transfers load across a diagonal line through the body.

    Looking at balance diagonally can therefore help explain asymmetries that don’t make sense when we consider only “left versus right.”

    Balance Is Interconnected

    The difficult part is that these forms of balance don’t exist independently.

    A horse that falls inward on a circle may compensate by accelerating.

    A horse that is heavy on the forehand may become more difficult to bend.

    A horse that struggles to load one hind limb may displace the opposite shoulder.

    A horse that cannot organise a diagonal pair effectively may struggle with lateral movements in one direction.

    One imbalance creates another.

    But this is also what makes balance such a powerful training concept.

    When we improve one area, other pieces can begin falling into place.

    A horse that becomes better balanced on a circle may suddenly maintain rhythm more easily.

    A horse that learns to control the shoulders may become straighter.

    A horse that becomes more symmetrical laterally may develop a more even rein contact.

    Rather than treating every problem as an isolated fault, balance encourages us to look at how the horse is organising his entire body.

    How Do We Bring a Horse Into Balance?

    Balance is developed progressively.

    It isn’t something we manufacture by holding the horse in a particular outline.

    Instead, exercises should help the horse discover a more efficient way of organising himself.

    Useful exercises include:

    1. In-hand work including flexions and mobilisation
      Simple in-hand work can help identify stiffness and asymmetry before adding the weight and influence of the rider.
    2. Shoulder-shift on a straight line
      Teaching the horse to reposition the shoulders without losing forward movement begins developing control of the forehand.
    3. Shoulder-shift on a circle
      This adds bend and the challenge of maintaining balance on a curved line.
    4. Weaving and zig-zag exercises
      Frequent changes of direction encourage the horse to reorganise his body repeatedly rather than locking into one posture.
    5. Figure eights
      Changes of bend reveal differences between the two sides and encourage the horse to move smoothly from one balance to another.
    6. Leg-yield
      Leg-yield develops lateral mobility, body awareness and the horse’s ability to move sideways while maintaining rhythm and forward movement.
    7. Shoulder-fore
      Shoulder-fore begins to address natural crookedness while remaining relatively accessible for the developing horse.
    8. Shoulder-in
      Shoulder-in develops greater control of the shoulders, engagement of the inside hind and the horse’s ability to carry himself while moving on multiple tracks.
    9. Forehand yield / turn on the forehand
      Used appropriately, this can teach the horse to move the hindquarters independently from the shoulders.
    10. Transitions
      Well-ridden transitions require the horse to reorganise his balance without falling forward, rushing, bracing or relying on the rider’s hand.
    11. Spiral circles
      Gradually decreasing and increasing the circle challenges the horse to adjust bend, balance and loading while maintaining rhythm.

    The important point isn’t simply to perform these exercises.

    The exercise is the tool.

    Improved balance is the objective.

    How Do We Know When the Horse Is in Balance?

    Balance is something the rider learns to feel.

    Some useful indicators include:

    • The horse can move forward, down and out into a longer neck without falling onto the forehand.
    • The rein contact feels even rather than one rein becoming consistently heavier.
    • The horse can remain balanced on the chosen circle or line without falling inward or outward.
    • Rhythm, suppleness and connection remain consistent through changes of direction and exercises.
    • Lateral bend becomes more even in both directions.
    • The horse feels lighter through the forehand without becoming hollow or disconnected.
    • The rider feels less need to physically hold, steer or support the horse.

    And perhaps the simplest description:

    It feels like flying a kite.

    You are connected to it, and you can influence it, but you are not physically holding it up.

    The horse is carrying himself.

    Balance as the Foundation of the Training Scale

    This is ultimately why I believe balance deserves to be considered alongside the traditional elements of the Training Scale.

    Rhythm depends upon balance.

    Suppleness depends upon balance.

    Connection depends upon balance.

    Impulsion depends upon balance.

    Straightness depends upon balance.

    Collection is an increasingly sophisticated expression of balance.

    But the relationship is not entirely one-way.

    As rhythm improves, balance can improve. As the horse becomes more supple, he gains more options for organising his body. Better connection allows energy and information to travel more effectively between horse and rider. Improved straightness allows the limbs to load more symmetrically.

    The Training Scale is therefore perhaps better understood not as a rigid staircase, but as an interconnected system.

    And running through that entire system is balance.

    Balance isn’t something we wait to achieve at the end of training.

    It is something we develop from the beginning and continue refining for the rest of the horse’s ridden life.

    FDO, LDR, Long and Low, Neck Extension and Rollkur: What’s the Difference?

    Forward, Down and Out (FDO), Long and Low, Neck Extension, Low, Deep and Round (LDR) and Rollkur are terms commonly used to describe the different horse head and neck positions during training.

    They are also frequently confused.

    Part of the problem is that several can involve lowering the horse’s head and neck. A photograph taken at a particular moment may make two very different training concepts appear superficially similar.

    But the height of the horse’s head tells us only part of the story.

    To understand what the horse is actually doing, we need to consider:

    • whether the neck is lengthening or shortening
    • the direction in which the horse is reaching
    • the position of the nose relative to the vertical
    • whether the horse is seeking or avoiding the contact
    • whether the rider is allowing the neck to lengthen or deliberately positioning it
    • what is happening through the back and thoracic sling
    • whether the hindlegs remain active
    • whether rhythm and balance are maintained.

    The fundamental distinction is not simply high versus low.

    It is what is happening to the whole horse as the frame changes.

    The different horse head and neck positions


    1. Neck Extension

    Neck Extension describes the horse lengthening its neck forward from its existing frame.

    It is therefore useful to think of neck extension primarily as an action, rather than one specific head position.

    The rider progressively allows the reins to lengthen, and the horse follows the contact by reaching forward with the head and neck.

    The degree of extension can vary.

    A horse may extend its neck only moderately from a working frame, or the extension may continue progressively forward and downward into a much longer and lower posture.

    What should happen during neck extension?

    As the rider allows the rein:

    • the horse follows the hand
    • the neck becomes longer
    • the nose reaches forward
    • the contact remains present and elastic
    • the topline lengthens
    • rhythm remains consistent
    • the hindlegs continue to step actively
    • the horse maintains its balance.

    The important word is follows.

    The rider does not simply throw the reins away and hope the horse lowers its head. The reins are progressively allowed and the horse follows the changing contact.

    This makes neck extension an extremely useful test of connection.

    If the horse is genuinely connected from the hindquarters, through the back and into the rider’s hand, it should be able to follow the hand as the reins are gradually lengthened.

    If instead the horse:

    • throws its head up
    • curls behind the contact
    • suddenly accelerates
    • slows down
    • falls onto the shoulders
    • or loses rhythm

    then the exercise has revealed something about the quality of the preceding connection.

    Neck extension is therefore both a gymnastic exercise and a diagnostic tool.


    2. Forward, Down and Out (FDO)

    Forward, Down and Out describes a particular direction and quality of neck extension.

    All three components matter.

    Forward

    The horse continues travelling actively forward with rhythm and purpose.

    Lowering the neck should not mean losing impulsion, slowing down or allowing the hindquarters to become inactive.

    Down

    The poll and neck progressively lower from the previous working position.

    Out

    This is perhaps the most important part.

    The horse reaches outward through the neck toward the contact.

    The cervical spine lengthens and the nose travels away from the chest rather than being drawn inward toward it.

    The rider allows the hand forward and the horse seeks that contact.

    In correct FDO:

    • the neck lengthens
    • the poll lowers
    • the nose reaches forward
    • the horse remains generally in front of the vertical
    • the topline lengthens
    • the back continues to swing
    • the contact remains elastic
    • the hindlegs remain active
    • rhythm and balance are maintained.

    FDO does not necessarily require the horse’s nose to be close to the ground.

    A horse can demonstrate clear FDO while the head and neck remain considerably higher than they would in a full Long and Low stretch.

    The defining characteristic is the direction of the stretch: forward, downward and outward.


    3. Long and Low

    Long and Low describes a much lower, deeply stretched frame in which the horse allows the neck to become both long and very low.

    In a pronounced Long and Low stretch, the horse may carry its muzzle toward knee, fetlock or even near-ground level.

    This is different from simply extending the neck moderately from a working frame.

    The horse is being allowed to take the stretch considerably farther.

    A correct Long and Low posture should involve:

    • substantial lengthening of the neck
    • a very low head and neck position
    • the nose reaching outward rather than curling toward the chest
    • lengthening through the topline
    • continued activity from the hindquarters
    • a swinging back
    • maintained rhythm
    • sufficient balance that the horse does not simply collapse onto the forehand.

    Low is not enough.

    This distinction is critical.

    A horse travelling with its nose close to the ground is not automatically performing useful Long and Low work.

    The horse can lower its head while:

    • dumping weight onto the shoulders
    • dragging itself along with the forehand
    • trailing the hindlegs
    • losing rhythm
    • becoming disconnected through the back
    • curling behind the contact.

    That horse may certainly be low, but it is not necessarily demonstrating the qualities we want from Long and Low work.

    The aim is not simply:

    How close can we get the horse’s nose to the ground?

    The aim is to allow substantial lengthening of the horse’s topline without losing the quality of the gait or the connection through the body.


    Neck Extension, FDO and Long and Low: How Do They Relate?

    These three concepts overlap, but they are not identical.

    A useful way to think about them is:

    Neck Extension = the action

    The horse follows the rider’s allowing hand and lengthens the neck.

    FDO = the direction and quality

    The horse reaches forward, downward and outward toward the contact.

    Long and Low = the deeper posture

    The extension continues until the horse is travelling in a substantially lower, longer frame.

    This means the progression might look something like:

    Working Frame

    Neck Extension

    Forward, Down and Out

    Long and Low

    There is no precise point at which one magically becomes another. These are descriptions of a changing frame rather than rigid geometric positions.

    What matters is that the horse continues to lengthen toward the contact.

    And this is where we reach a fundamentally different training concept.


    4. Low, Deep and Round (LDR)

    Low, Deep and Round also involves lowering the horse’s neck, but the direction of the cervical posture is different.

    Rather than predominantly lengthening the neck outward, the horse is ridden in a lower and more deeply flexed frame.

    The neck becomes rounder and the nose may travel behind the vertical.

    An LDR posture may therefore show:

    • a lower poll
    • increased cervical flexion
    • a rounder neck
    • the nose behind the vertical
    • a shorter distance between the nose and chest
    • less outward extension of the neck.

    This is an important distinction.

    In FDO and Long and Low:

    The neck predominantly lengthens away from the body.

    In LDR:

    The neck is lowered while cervical flexion increases inward.

    These are not simply different degrees of the same stretch.

    They represent different ways of positioning and using the neck.

    LDR has been used by some riders and trainers as a gymnastic posture intended to influence suppleness and the horse’s use of the back and body.

    It has also been controversial, particularly when deep flexion becomes excessive, prolonged or dependent upon restrictive rein pressure.

    This leads to another important distinction:

    LDR and Rollkur are not automatically the same thing.


    5. Rollkur / Hyperflexion

    Rollkur is generally associated with deliberate, extreme hyperflexion of the horse’s neck. The FEI defines it as being achieved through “aggressive force”.

    The cervical spine is strongly flexed and the horse’s nose is brought markedly behind the vertical and inward toward the chest.

    The posture may involve:

    • extreme cervical flexion
    • substantial shortening and compression of the neck
    • the nose positioned far behind the vertical
    • the muzzle brought close toward the chest
    • considerable rider influence in creating or maintaining the posture.

    Rollkur should therefore not be confused with stretching.

    In fact, if we look specifically at the direction of the neck, it sits toward the opposite end of the spectrum.

    In a stretch:

    The neck becomes longer and the nose travels away from the body.

    In hyperflexion:

    The cervical spine becomes increasingly flexed and the nose travels inward toward the body.

    Both horses may have their heads relatively low.

    But biomechanically, they are doing very different things.


    LDR vs Rollkur

    This distinction deserves particular attention because the two terms are frequently used interchangeably.

    A horse being:

    • low
    • round
    • or behind the vertical

    does not automatically mean it is being ridden in Rollkur.

    Rollkur refers to extreme hyperflexion.

    LDR describes a lower, deeper and rounder posture involving increased cervical flexion but does not inherently describe the same degree of extreme overflexion.

    The boundary between the two can become contentious because posture exists on a continuum rather than in perfectly defined boxes.

    For that reason, looking only at a single photograph can also be misleading.

    Degree, duration, rider influence and the horse’s ability to readily leave the posture all matter.


    Behind the Vertical Does Not Equal Rollkur

    The position of the nose relative to the vertical is useful information, but it should not become our entire assessment of the horse.

    A horse may momentarily come behind the vertical because:

    • it loses balance
    • it avoids the contact
    • the rider’s hand becomes restrictive
    • it lacks sufficient strength
    • it anticipates an exercise
    • it becomes tense
    • it has deliberately been ridden into a deeper frame.

    These situations are not equivalent.

    Likewise, a horse being in front of the vertical does not automatically mean it is correctly connected.

    A horse can poke its nose outward while remaining hollow through the back, inactive behind and disconnected from the rider’s hand.

    The outline gives us information. It does not give us the entire diagnosis.


    Stretching vs Positioning

    Perhaps the simplest distinction throughout this entire subject is:

    Is the horse lengthening toward the contact, or is the neck being increasingly flexed inward?

    During genuine neck extension:

    The rider allows → the horse follows → the neck lengthens.

    Through FDO:

    The horse reaches forward → down → and out.

    In a full Long and Low stretch:

    That lengthening continues into a substantially lower posture.

    As we move toward LDR:

    The neck becomes increasingly flexed and rounded rather than simply longer.

    At the extreme end:

    Hyperflexion dramatically increases that inward cervical flexion.

    That distinction tells us considerably more than simply describing every one of these positions as a “low frame.”


    What Should a Correct Stretch Feel Like?

    Whether asking for moderate neck extension, FDO or a deeper Long and Low stretch, the rider should feel that the horse is taking the reins forward.

    As the rider gradually allows the rein:

    • the horse follows the hand
    • the neck becomes longer
    • the back continues working underneath the rider
    • the rhythm remains consistent
    • the steps remain active
    • the horse does not suddenly accelerate
    • the horse does not collapse onto the shoulders
    • the contact becomes longer rather than disappearing.

    There should still be a connection between horse and rider.

    One particularly useful test is what happens next.

    Can you progressively shorten the reins and bring the horse back into its previous working frame while retaining the same rhythm, balance and connection?

    Ideally, the horse should be able to move:

    Working frame → extension → working frame

    without needing to be completely reorganised.

    The ability to change the frame while maintaining the quality of the gait is more valuable than simply achieving an impressive-looking stretch.


    Common Misconceptions

    “Neck Extension and Long and Low are the same thing.”

    Not quite.

    Neck extension describes the lengthening action.

    Long and Low describes a considerably lower and longer resulting frame.

    A horse can demonstrate neck extension without taking the stretch all the way into Long and Low.


    “FDO means the horse has to put its nose on the ground.”

    No.

    FDO describes the direction of the stretch — Forward, Down and Out.

    The horse may demonstrate FDO at varying heights.


    “The horse’s nose is near the ground, so it’s doing good Long and Low work.”

    Not necessarily.

    The horse must maintain activity, rhythm, balance and appropriate use of the topline.

    Simply lowering the head is not enough.


    “Any horse behind the vertical is being ridden in Rollkur.”

    No.

    Behind the vertical describes the position of the nose.

    Rollkur describes deliberate extreme hyperflexion.

    Persistent work behind the vertical may still warrant scrutiny, but the terms are not interchangeable.


    “LDR and Rollkur are the same.”

    Not necessarily.

    Both involve increased cervical flexion, but Rollkur describes the extreme end of hyperflexion.

    The degree, duration and method of producing the posture matter.


    “Long and Low puts horses on the forehand.”

    Poor Long and Low work certainly can.

    Correct Long and Low should still retain activity and balance.

    The horse lowers its head and neck, but that does not mean it should simply transfer its bodyweight forward and collapse onto the shoulders.


    Look at the Whole Horse

    Head and neck position is highly visible, which makes it tempting to judge training from that alone.

    Instead, look at the entire horse.

    Ask:

    1. Has the rhythm changed?
    2. Are the hindlegs still active?
    3. Is the back swinging?
    4. Is the neck becoming longer or shorter?
    5. Which direction is the nose travelling — outward or inward?
    6. Is the horse seeking the contact or avoiding it?
    7. Is the contact elastic?
    8. Has the horse maintained its balance?
    9. Can the horse smoothly transition into another frame?
    10. Does the posture appear to come from the horse following the rider’s hand, or from the rider positioning the neck?

    Those questions tell us considerably more than:

    “Where is the horse’s head?”


    The Dressage Atlas Takeaway

    FDO, Long and Low, Neck Extension, LDR and Rollkur should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions of a horse carrying its head lower.

    There are important differences.

    Neck Extension describes the horse lengthening its neck as it follows the rider’s allowing hand.

    Forward, Down and Out describes the direction of that extension — outward toward the contact as well as downward.

    Long and Low takes that lengthening considerably farther into a very low, elongated posture.

    These three concepts are therefore closely related through the idea of lengthening toward the contact.

    Low, Deep and Round moves toward increased cervical flexion instead, producing a lower, deeper and rounder frame in which the nose may travel behind the vertical.

    Rollkur or extreme hyperflexion takes that inward flexion substantially farther and should not be confused with stretching.

    Most importantly, none of these positions should be judged from the neck alone.

    The horse’s neck is part of a connected biomechanical system extending from the hindquarters, through the back and thoracic sling, through the neck and ultimately toward the rider’s hand.

    The purpose is therefore not simply to manufacture a particular silhouette.

    The frame should be the consequence of how the horse is using its body — not the entire objective of the training.

    We’ve spent most of our lives being taught what “straight” means.

    They all have one thing in common: no bend.

    Horse straightness in dressage works a little different and I’m here to tell you that this is also straight:

    It is… if you’re a horse.

    There are plenty of highly technical articles explaining straightness, natural crookedness, asymmetry and biomechanics in horses. But the basic principle is actually much simpler:

    A horse can have a straight spine and still not be travelling straight.

    And conversely:

    A horse can have a slight bend through its body and be functionally straight.

    The reason comes down to the shape of the horse.

    Horses Aren’t Rectangles

    Look at a horse from above.

    The horse is relatively narrow through the shoulders and wider through the hindquarters.

    Now imagine that horse travelling along the arena wall with its spine perfectly parallel to the wall.

    At first glance, that sounds straight.

    But it isn’t.

    Because the hindquarters are wider than the shoulders, the hind feet will naturally travel on tracks slightly outside those of the front feet.

    So although the spine is straight, the horse isn’t necessarily travelling straight through its limbs.

    This is where dressage straightness starts to make more sense.

    Horse Straightness in Dressage Is About the Tracks

    In dressage, we aren’t trying to make the horse into a rigid ruler.

    We want the hind feet to follow the tracks of the corresponding front feet.

    The left hind should follow the left fore.

    The right hind should follow the right fore.

    This is often described as the horse travelling on two tracks. Each pair of legs following the same line of travel.

    To achieve this while riding along the arena wall, the horse may need to carry its shoulders very slightly in front of the hindquarters.

    In practical terms, this can look like a very mild shoulder-fore position.

    The head and neck may be positioned slightly to the inside, with a small amount of bend through the horse’s body.

    Now the spine is no longer perfectly parallel with the wall.

    Yet the horse is travelling straighter.

    Why?

    Because the hind feet can now step into the tracks of the front feet.

    Straight Does Not Mean Rigid

    This distinction matters because riders can become obsessed with keeping the horse’s body perfectly parallel to the arena wall.

    The wall then becomes the definition of straightness.

    But the wall doesn’t tell you where the horse’s feet are travelling.

    The tracks do.

    A horse can look beautifully parallel to the wall while the hindquarters travel on a completely different line from the shoulders.

    Likewise, a horse can have a subtle degree of positioning or bend while its hind legs are travelling directly behind its front legs.

    The second horse is the straighter horse.

    What About Natural Crookedness?

    Every horse has some degree of natural asymmetry.

    One side may feel easier to bend than the other. One hind leg may tend to step differently. The horse may prefer to carry its shoulders or quarters slightly to one side.

    This matters in training, but we don’t need to turn it into a complicated argument about whether horses are “left-handed”, “right-handed”, hollow on one side or stronger on another.

    The important part for the rider is much simpler:

    Notice where the shoulders are. Notice where the hindquarters are. Notice where the feet are travelling.

    Straightness is something we develop through training, not something we create by forcing the horse’s spine into a perfectly straight line.

    Straightness on Curved Lines

    The same principle applies on circles and curved lines.

    A horse travelling correctly on a circle is obviously bent.

    But it can still be straight.

    On a circle, straightness means the horse’s body follows the curve of the line and the hind feet follow the tracks of the front feet.

    If the quarters swing out, the horse isn’t straight.

    If the quarters fall in, the horse isn’t straight.

    If the shoulders drift away from the intended line, the horse isn’t straight.

    The question isn’t:

    “Is the horse bent?”

    The question is:

    “Are the shoulders, body and hindquarters aligned with the line of travel?”

    So What Does Straightness Actually Mean?

    Straightness in dressage is alignment.

    The horse’s front and hindquarters are organised so that the hind legs follow the path of the forelegs and the horse travels evenly along the intended line.

    Sometimes that line is straight.

    Sometimes it’s curved.

    And sometimes achieving straightness requires a small amount of bend.

    Which brings us back to the seemingly ridiculous statement we started with:

    A straight horse can be bent.

    Kapeesh?
